It's the middle of the summer now, and across America it's been mighty hot. If your home is not cooling off as it should, perhaps you're in the need of an air conditioner repair or even other alternatives.

There are several things you can do to ensure proper air conditioning within your home:

Check the filters of the unit and the Freon level. Chances are they need cleaned. This should be an ongoing maintenance chore needing done every couple of months that the unit is in use.

If the Freon is very low, or even out, this is an obvious issue. Sometimes Freon will leak which causes other problems within the unit.

If you're unsure about handling these two things yourself, call a few local companies and get solid quotes for their air conditioner repair service. By fixing these potential problem areas, you may be able to correct the poor cooling problem.

Tim Swan, of Swan Heating and Air Conditioning, in Northern Colorado, offers up a few other timely tips:

-Make sure your home insulation is adequate. This is one of the most effective and least expensive cooling measures you can add to your house. By having proper insulation you can keep your home cooler and lower your power bill.

If your home hasn't received additional insulation within the past 10 years, you may be ready to pursue this as a cooling possibility.

-Add ceiling fans to at least your key rooms. Ceiling fans in kitchens and bedrooms are a great idea. They're relatively inexpensive and do a great job of moving the cool air around from your air conditioner.

Our skin is generally cooled by moving air. This means you can actually feel cooler by using ceiling fans while leaving the air conditioning at a higher setting.

-Replace your windows. This is obviously more expensive than adding fans and insulation, but can have a huge effect on the cooling (and heating) of your home. Warm air gets in and cool air escapes if you have leaky windows (and doors).

-Cover your windows exposed to the hot sun with awnings or shades on the outside. Blinds on the inside let the hot air in. Shades on the outside keep most of the hot air out.

By doing this, you're a/c won't have to work as hard, and you will notice a big difference in those rooms facing south and west.

If the problem is that you do need an air conditioner repair, you should still strive to take care of these other areas as time and money allow. Together, they all will help tremendously in keeping the heat down during these hot months.
